TINTS, SHADES, AND COLORFUL SELF PORTRAITS!

Mrs. A's class did an amazing job painting their rainbow backgrounds, and they worked hard on making more realistic looking self-portraits. We talked about contrast - how the bright and colorful background creates great contrast when paired with the simple black and white self-portraits.

Mrs. S's first grade class created the same project but with different background guidelines. They could make the rainbow stripes or do their own thing with the same colors.

Above you will see the 2nd and 3rd graders drawing their self portraits from a guide to add more variety and to make it look more like them. 1st and Kinder followed step-by-step with me instead of working independently.

Our 4th - 5th graders worked on tints & shades. They created value scales and practiced the delicate nature of figuring out how much black or white to add to the color to make it just a little bit darker or lighter than the previous shade. They were so concentrated while making these, I know they loved the challenge. This sheet will serve as a guide as they begin painting their value landscapes next week in the art studio.
